Originally a replacement for the Kawasaki Z300, the Z400 that has returned to the 2023 lineup features a host of improvements that make the bike a leader in its class. A featherweight tubular chassis uses the engine as a stress member, adding to the rigidity while saving tremendous amounts of weight, at only 167kg wet this motorcycle is a true featherweight, in fact it is 1kg lighter than its predecessor. On the other hand it does increase the capacity of the engine from the 300 to 400cc adding respectable 6bhp (From 38 to 44) and very impressive 10nm of torque (From 27 to 37). Making the Z400 a fantastic and endlessly fun package.
The Z400 is powered by a responsive, rider-friendly 399cc parallel twin engine complete with assist and slipper clutch. Created with Kawasaki’s unique Sugomi design philosophy, the Z400 benefits from light, predictable handling plus low weight, the combination for a middle-weight naked machine.
The Sugomi design philosophy is strongly utilised throughout the bike. Unmistakable stance of the bike that brings to mind a predator stalking its prey, ready to pounce at any moment. Low headlight and high tail are a staple of the Z design. In addition, in line with the rest of the family of Z bikes, fairing is kept to a minimum leaving the tubular trellis frame, engine and exhaust on display for those who truly appreciate the beauty that comes from mechanical excellence.
The Z400 was designed to be a real Supernaked machine. Whether navigating the urban jungle or parked on a street corner, this lightweight, powerful Supernaked is sure to turn heads.
Unmistakable heartbeat
Legendary Kawasaki twin cylinder engine.
The noise of a 90 degree crank, twin cylinder, dual overhead cam, four stroke Kawasaki engine is unmistakable to all enthusiasts of motorcycling. Tried, tested and loved by many powerplant is at the centre of the new bike design. Increased performance comes from extra 100cc of engine capacity which allows the bike to pass through the rigorous Euro5 emissions limits while at the same time boosting the mid and low end performance significantly. Making for smoother and more usable power delivery.
Aggressive bodywork
Sugomi inspired
The new Z400 combines the sharp, aggressive style of the Z650 with the large-volume design of the Z300 to create an aggressive, agile, masculine impression. Its muscular, athletic bodywork reflects the increased performance while forming a flowing design that appears to float above the engine. Like other models in the Z Series, sugomi design elements (crouching stance, low-positioned head and upswept tail) give it a silhouette instantly recognisable as a Kawasaki Supernaked.
Ride with ease
Light feeling lever
More compact clutch (ø139 mm >> ø125 mm) with less rigid operating plates offers a lighter lever pull. Complementing the extremely light feel at the lever, the new clutch has a wider engagement range, facilitating control.
Sure stopping power
Pure control
Measuring ø310 mm (the same size as those of the Z1000), the Z400/250’s semi-floating front disc offers sure stopping power. A rigid new front brake master cylinder helps eliminate ineffective (idle) stroke, contributing to controllability, while carefully selected brake hose dimensions and material contribute to brake touch. All models are equipped with ABS and feature the latest ABS unit from Nissin, the most compact and lightweight available.
Trellis frame
Dynamic rigidity
The Z400 features a trellis frame similar in design to that of the Ninja H2. Kawasaki’s advanced dynamic rigidity analysis was used to ensure optimum rigidity with light weight. The engine is rigid-mounted and used as a stressed member. The new frame design contributes significantly to the bike’s low curb mass.
