Ducati Panigale V4 R – The Sound Of Excellence

The new Ducati Panigale V4 R is a true race bike for the road. Homologated for Ducati’s world superbike efforts in the 2019 season. The new Ducati V4R has been developed by Ducati Corse utilising years of both Moto GP and WSBK racing knowhow to create this stunning machine. The V4R is the most powerful road machine Ducati have ever produced. In fact this road going motorcycle has more power than Casey Stoners 2007 moto GP championship winning Desmosedici GP7.

The engine of the new Panigale V4 R is a 998 cu. cm to keep within the limits imposed by WSBK rules for four cylinder machines. The reduction in displacement is obtained by keeping the bore size of 81 mm unchanged, whereas the stroke has been changed to 48.4 mm thanks to a new steel forged crankshaft that rotates on main bearing shells and maintains the 70° offset layout of the crank pins.

The 998 cu. cm 90° V4 delivers a staggering 221 HP (162 kW) at 15,250 rpm and a torque of 112.4 Nm at 11,500 rpm in standard Euro 4 compliant trim with a rev limit of 16,000 rpm and a huge 16,500 rpm in sixth gear. However when fitting the full Ducati Performance exhaust system made by Akropovic and dedicated fuel map produced by Ducati Corse the power reaches a massive 234 HP!!!!! (174 kW) at 15,500 and 119 Nm of torque at 11,750 rpm.

Compared to the Panigale V4, the new V4R is fitted with a taller screen to improve the air protection for the rider within the fairing.

One of the most radical and noticeable aspects of the V4R are the aerodynamic appendiges (wings) derived from the ones used on the 2016 Moto GP bike. Since 2016 the rules have been tightened on the use of the wing system within Moto GP, but these wings add around 30kg of down force at 270kmh helping firstly to keep the front wheel on the floor under extreme acceleration and secondly pushing the front tyre into the road under breaking and cornering.

The side fairings of the V4R have air vents sculpted within them to aid in the cooling of this stunning engine.

As with previous R spec Ducati, the V4R is fitted with manually adjustable front forks and rear shock. The Panigale V4 R is exclusively fitted with the new pressurised Öhlins NPX 25/30 forks and an Ohlins TTX36 rear shock. The steering damper also made by Öhlins is manually adjustable.

The NPX 25/30 forks use a pressurised damping system derived from the world of racing. Compared to more traditional systems, the pressurised system offers better damping ensuring greater stability under extreme cornering and breaking.

The new Ducati V4R uses the latest electronic systems that include Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control EVO (DTC), Ducati Slide Control (DSC), Ducati Wheelie Control EVO (DWC), Ducati Power Launch (DPL), Ducati Quick Shift up/down EVO (DQS), and Engine Brake Control EVO also fitted exclusively to the V4R is a pit limiter. Once enabled it self-limits the bike speed when riding. The speed limiter can be changed from a minimum of 40 km/h to a maximum of 80 km/h.

Each of the above riding aids has a different level of intrusion depending on each of the ride modes from RACE, SPORT and WET.

Ducati V4R Panigale

The Engine

Desmosedici Stradale R

The 1,103 cu. cm 90° V4 of the Panigale V4 is replaced by the 998 cu. cm Desmosedici Stradale R to comply with the displacement limits imposed by the WSBK championship. The reduction in displacement is obtained by keeping the bore size of 81 mm unchanged, whereas the stroke has been changed to 48.4 mm thanks to a new steel forged crankshaft that rotates on main bearing shells and maintains the 70° offset layout of the crank pins.

Performance data

The 998 cu. cm 90° V4 delivers 221 HP (162 kW) at 15,250 rpm and a torque of 112.4 Nm at 11,500 rpm (values referring to EU type-approval). The limiter is set to 16,000 rpm (16,500 rpm on sixth gear). By fitting the full-racing exhaust Ducati Performance by Akrapovič, the maximum power reaches 234 HP (174 kW) at 15,500 rpm and the torque reaches 119 Nm at 11,750 rpm.

Lightened components

The Desmosedici Stradale R features lightened internal components that contribute to reach 16,500 rpm in sixth gear.

Intake

The Desmosedici Stradale R engine breathes thanks to the oval throttle bodies with aerodynamic throttles and equivalent diameter increased by 4 mm (56 mm in total), connected to variable height intake funnels with dedicated lengths.

Aerodynamic Package

Larger windscreen, headlight fairing and side fairings

Compared to the Panigale V4, the new windscreen, higher and with greater incidence, improves the air protection of the rider in the fairing, with effect in particular on the helmet and the upper part of the shoulders.

Aerodynamic appendices

The Panigale V4 R is provided with aerodynamic appendices derived from those used on the GP16, thus with a greater efficiency compared to those currently used in the MotoGP.

Effects on riding

The aerodynamic appendices and the special design of the fairing increase the vertical load to the wheels (overall + 30 kg at 270 km/h). Increased load results in a reduction in the “floatation” of the front wheel at high speeds and of the wheelie tendency, and greater stability during braking, corner entry and cornering.

Side extractors

On the sides, the elegant air vents of the Panigale V4 are replaced by more efficient extractors, designed to manage the operating temperatures during the race of the more powerful engine that drives the competition Ducati Panigale V4 R. The extractors increase the speed at which the cooling air crosses the water and oil radiators by 6% and 16%, respectively.

Chassis

“Front Frame”

The “Front Frame” of the Panigale V4 R stands out for the lightening on the machined side panels that allow to reach the stiffness target required by Ducati Corse and further reduce its weight.

Adjustable pivot

The modifications to the chassis are completed by the possibility of adjusting the height of the rear swinging arm pivot to 4 positions in steps of 2 mm. The adjustable pivot increases the adjustment possibilities to more precisely adapt the bike to the riding style and the type of track.

Öhlins mechanical suspensions

Considering its special use, almost exclusively on track, the Panigale V4 R is not provided with the Öhlins event-based, semi-active suspensions of the V4 S, but features professional mechanical units of the Swedish company

Electronics Package

The Panigale V4 R is equipped with the latest generation electronic package, the one of the Panigale V4, that manages all riding phases, based on the use of the 6-axis inertial platform by Bosch (6D IMU – Inertial Measurement Unit), suitably reviewed in the logic of intervention to better support the professional riders.

TFT Instrumentation

The new Panigale V4 R uses the same cutting-edge, high resolution 5″ full-TFT colour display (186.59 PPI – 800xRGBx480) as the Panigale V4. Graphics have been revised to reflect the introduction of new functions and the higher engine rev ‘red zone’.

Ducati Lap Timer GPS (DLT GPS)

The Panigale V4 R is provided with a lap timer integrated in the instrument panel, with evolved functions with respect to the one available for the Panigale V4.

Pit Limiter (PIT)

The Pit Limiter makes its debut on the Panigale V4 R: once enabled, by pressing the proper key on the right-hand block, it self-limits the bike speed when riding in the pit lane. The speed limit can be changed through the specific menu from a minimum of 40 km/h to a maximum of 80 km/h

Ducati presents the new Panigale V4 R: the bike that adopts technical solutions previously reserved for MotoGP and WorldSBK Championship. This is the envy of other manufacturers. The Ducati Corse Department not only goes racing, but also develops the road bikes.

Engine

Top performance

Red line of the rev counter at 16,000 rpm (16,500 rpm in sixth gear)

The Desmosedici Stradale R is a more responsive engine that is allowed to reach the red area of the rev counter at 16,000 rpm (16,500 rpm in sixth gear). This ensures a greater sprint and top speed. This results in 221 HP (162 kW) that react immediately to the throttle inputs , delivered at 15,250 rpm, 2,250 extra rpm with respect to the V4 of 1,103 cc.

Impressive figures for a 998 cc engine, that become even more amazing by fitting the full-racing exhaust Ducati Performance by Akrapovič, bringing the maximum power to 234 HP (174 kW) at 15,500 rpm.

Chassis

Improved track-feeling

Man & Machine As One

To increase nimbleness, rider feeling and grip, the chassis follows the evolutionary direction traced by the Panigale V4/V4 S with the 2022 model, while maintaining fully mechanical suspension adjustment.

At the front, the Öhlins NPX25/30 pressurized fork increases its travel by 5 mm compared to the previous “R”. This technical solution, combined with an Öhlins TTX36 shock absorber and a standard adjustment of the swingarm pivot to the +1 position, increases the rear height by 20 mm. In this way, a higher centre of gravity is achieved and therefore greater nimbleness in corner entry and changes of direction.

Aerodynamics

Smaller - Lighter

Less Resistance

The aerodynamic package has been revised with a view to greater efficiency: the new two-element wings (main + flap) guarantee the same aerodynamic load, but are more compact and thinner (respectively by 40% and 50%).

Electronics

Race-Oriented Electronics

Dependable, Functional Develpoment

The greater effectiveness of the new Panigale V4 R in circuit use is also obtained thanks to the adoption of all the electronic evolutions already introduced on the Panigale V4 ’22 and ’23, with the expansion and evolution of the Power Modes, new “Track Evo” display on the dashboard, engine maps with calibration dedicated to each single gear, refinements to the Ducati Traction Control and the Ride By Wire system, but also the adoption of the Engine Brake Control EVO 2 strategy, the new strategy for the DQS and the cooling fan control update.
