'Naked' Bikes Boost Motorcycle Sales Figures

Motorcycle sales figures released by the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) show a 37% boom in bike registrations compared to the same half year figures for 2013.

Overall for 2014, the total power-two-wheeler market was up 11% – that’s 5348 more bikes sold than in 2013.  Most sectors did well but the 'naked' category which includes the new Kawasaki Z1000 and Z1000SX showed the greatest demand with an increase of 37.3% so far this year across all manufacturers.

Other categories showing a rise are custom bikes up by 10.3%, tourers by 21.6% and adventure sports by 6.8%. Even super sports which is supposedly a category in decline saw a modest increase of 2.1%.

Stephen Latham, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) said “June marked another good month for the motorcycle market with sales up 6.3%”.

“We can see a clear indication that the experienced riders/buyers are returning to the market. This is evident due to the sales of large capacity machines which saw registrations up 19.6% in the 651-1000cc sector and 17.9% in machines over 1000cc. We hope to see this trend continue through the second half of 2014”.
