DVLA Paper Driving Licence Changes from 8 June 2015

As from 8 June 2015, the driving licence paper counterpart to the photocard licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA.

As from 8 June 2015, the driving licence paper counterpart to the photocard licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA.

The driving licence counterpart was introduced to display details that could not be included on the photocard. These details include some vehicle categories you are entitled to drive and any endorsement/penalty points you have.

After 8 June 2015 the paper part will no longer have any legal status and can be destroyed as only your your current photocard driving licence will be valid.

In future all penalty points and endorsements will only be recorded electronically, and will not be printed or written on either photocard licences or paper driving licences.  So if you commit an offence you will still have to pay any applicable fine and submit your licence to the courts but the way the court deals with the paperwork will change.

Hence from 8 June 2015 neither the photocard driving licence nor the paper licence will provide an accurate account of any driving endorsements you may have so instead, this information will be held on DVLA's driver record, and can be viewed online (free) or by phone or post (retrieved at a cost!).

So if you want to view your driver record you can View Driving Licence service to see what details are on your licence, including what vehicles you can drive and any penalty points you may have.  This may be for hiring a car, providing details to your employer or test riding a motorcycle!

From 8 June, if you'd like to test ride a motorcycle at Seastar, as we need to check penalty points etc, you'll have to get a code to allow us to access your details.  You can get this code on the DVLA website and entering your driving licence number and national insurance number.  To protect your details the code is only valid for 72 hours.

If you cannot generate a code online then you can call 0300 083 0013 and DVLA will provide you with a code.  Alternatively, you can call DVLA on 0300 790 6801 and leave permission for your driving record to be checked verbally by a nominated company.  Beware of call costs though some DVLA numbers charge 51p a minute!
